Notes

On self-guided tours you are expected to know how to fix small problems in your bike. You should be an independent traveler, used to read maps, route instructions and manage your own time. You will bike at your rhythm and do “as you please”. From us, you will get 24 hours support by phone, maps, route instructions and historical notes. We will also give you suggestions of places to eat. The downsides will be not to have the support car to take you in case you get tired and not to have the company and expertise of our guides, which are like family to us and will be like family to you!

On Van guided tours the guide will be the driver. He/she will guide you from a distance. The car will be near enough so that you can see it on the junctions. The guide will stop at important or interesting places to give history explanations or tell a story. Some people call this a supported tour, though in our case it is more than that because you are actually being guided. Lunches are picnic type with traditional foods from the area where we are cycling. Sometimes we also use local restaurants. Though price, most of the times, includes meals, we can give you a price with no meals if you prefer to have a more independent trip.

On Guided tours groups are accompanied by one or two cycling guides, besides a guide who takes the support car, prepares the picnics and transports your luggage. Lunches are picnic type with traditional foods from the area where we are cycling. Sometimes we also use local restaurants.

On van guided or guided cycling tours, you can expect full service from your guides. They will do their best to make your holiday an unforgettable one.

Our guides are all Portuguese and know our region very well. They are very service minded and most of them have been working with us for many years. They are bikers themselves and love to go cycling on their holidays, so they know what you expect from them!

In dinners arranged by us and you can be sure you will try the best gastronomy as we choose restaurants well known by us for its good traditional food. No «touristy» places included!

12/03/2019

Great tour for fit people wanting to do a bit of exercise. E bikes are a good option if you have some not so fit partner. We took the van guided option. For 2 or 4 people it’s enough. Our guide, Jorge, was really good and managed to be everywhere!

‘Go Active’ Bike Tour (Van Guided) Great trip, well organized, great time!
Amazing trip through Alentejo, Costa Vicentina, and into the Algarve. The trip was super-well organized and the routes varied and fun. Everything from aslphalt to near-technical mountain bike trails, even a single-track-type trail along a canal… Hotel and meal choices excellent – ranging from nice to spectacular! Highly recommend Portugal Best Cycling and Turaventur!

Caveat: For the ‘Go Active’ tour, the description is VERY ACCURATE: you should love to climb hills, and go fast and hard on your bike. Don’t sign up for this trip casually!

We chose ‘go active’ because it had longer days and we got to see more of the country than with other options, but by the time the trip came up, we were not prepared for the longer distances and the stamina required- in spite of the description spelling it out clearly! We switched to ‘Van Guided’ after originally booking ‘self-guided,’ and thank goodness we did. Our expert guide Jorge was fun and pragmatic- and a bit of a life – saver! Always ready with water refills, snacks, and local knowledge! The partially-guided tour included great meals and bike rentals – turned out to be an excellent value! Would do this again in a heart beat – but please consider easier trips with shorter days so you can truly enjoy the relaxed pace of life in Portugal. Though Lisbon was great (not our our tour) Lagos, Lagos was the only disappointing part of the bike trip- it’s very populated with resorts, condos, golf courses, etc. We loved the less populated and comparatively rural areas west and north.

Thanks so much to the terrific team at PBC/Turaventur!
