We all had a wonderful afternoon, cycling with George. He was knowledgeable, patient and kind, and it was a perfect way to see the countryside. We were able to learn about the megalths, menhir, dolmen, and also about the cork trees and their harvest. And today we went to Monsaraz on George’s recommendation, which was so interesting and historic. Thanks again!

Cycling the Megaliths — Fantastic!
The two of us booked a cycle tour of the megaliths outside Evora with Portugal Best Cycling, hoping we’d hook up with an interesting group of international travellers as we often do on these tours. It turned out that we were alone that morning, just us and our wonderful guide, Jorge. He picked us up at our Evora hotel with the bikes on his jeep and drove about 20 minutes outside of town, then up a steep 4k dirt road where we parked and walked to the incredible group of almost 100 standing stones (the cromlech). Then we walked back to our bikes and careened down the road to where we walked to the huge standing stone (the menir). Then it was a long cycle on hilly roads to get to the most fantastic site, the grand dolmen, a gravesite of gigantic stones leaning on one another. Jorge was great in suggesting some of the reasons for these structures and the possible ways the people of 4000-10000 years ago managed the incredible engineering. These are awesome sights. We then had a brilliant off-road cycle on dirt paths through cork plantations, ending with the long uphill back to the jeep.
Being from Canada, we weren’t used to cycling in the mid-summer Portuguese heat. Jorge took really good care of us, offering longer and shorter options, patiently monitoring our situation and needs. When one of us started suffering from the heat, Jorge took over, making sure we were cooled down, safe and comfortable to continue. We loved Jorge and every minute of the tour. Highly recommended.
